반야(Banya)는 전통적인 붓글씨와 목판을 새김을 혼합한 한글 부리계열 글꼴입니다. 이 서체는 20세기 초에 목판본으로 출판된 것으로 추정되는 한 불경에서 영감을 얻어 만들게 된 서체입니다. 전반적으로 나무에 새겨져 샤프하고 단단함 느낌이 듬과 동시에 붓의 쓰임도 같이 느껴져서 섬세하고 독특한 형상을 자아냅니다. 예로들면, 이응의 형태는 마치 붓으로 이어쓴 느낌을 강조한 반면에, 디귿이나 미음에서는 새김의 형태를 도드라지게 하기위해 살짝 스텐실적인 느낌을 가미했습니다. 반야 미스트(Banya Mist)는 반야 오리지널이 가진 형태를 유지한채 일부 형태가 사라지는 형상을 띄고 있는 스텐실계열 디스플레이형 글꼴입니다. ‘반야’가 깨달음의 경지에 이른 초월적 지혜를 뜻하는 거라면, 그 경지의 다다름은 마치 보이지 않는 안개와 같은 느낌이라고 생각했습니다. 반야가 목판본 불경에서 나타난 글자의 형태에서 영감을 받은 것이라면, 반야 미스트는 진리는 안개에 가려져 보이지 않는 듯한 느낌을 글자 형태에 담아보고자 했습니다.

기파란의 이름 배경은 생각보다 단순하다. 한국인이라면 누구나 쉽게 떠오를 신라시대 화랑의 이름 ‘기파랑’에서 따온 것이다. 젊은 화랑이 지닌 열정적이고 도전적인 모습과 인자한 성품의 느낌이 글자의 인상과 어울린다고 생각했다. 살짝 넓은 너비의 수직 수평의 민부리형 구조는 젊은 무사의 기개를, 부리의 디테일과 중간중간의 부드러운 휴머니스트적 터치는 화랑의 인품을 표현해보고자 했다. 이름을 특별히 살짝 변경한데는 이유가 있다. 한자음을 해석하자면 랑은 사내를 칭한 것인데 제작자로써 서체에 성별을 더하고 싶지 않았기 때문이다. 란으로 바꿔 단어 그대로 ‘파란’이라는 단어가 더 느낌적으로 잘 어울린다는 판단이 들었다.
