The Latin name of the village (Veneris Portus) derives from the temple dedicated to the goddess Venus Ericina, which stood on the place where today is the church of San Pietro. The dedication to Venus was probably linked to the fact that, according to myth, the goddess was born from the foam of the abundant sea just below that promontory.
