Curved elements introduce a humanistic touch to the vowels, while characters such as ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅉ, and ㅊ have evolved into more organic forms.

‘온’은 무거운 짐, 부채, 부담 등을 뜻한다. 개인은 윗사람에게 온을 받는다. 윗사람이 아니거나 적어도 자신과 동등한 지위의 누군가에게 온을 받으면 불쾌한 열등감을 느낀다. 어떤 사람이 “나는 그에게 온을 입고 있다”라고 말했다면, ‘나는 그에게 큰 의무감을 느낀다’라는 뜻으로 이해해야 한다. 그들은 이런 채권자, 즉 은혜를 베푼 사람을 ‘온진’이라고 부른다. 일본에는 이런 속담이 있다. “기리보다 견디기 힘든 것은 없다.” 모름지기 사람은 기무를 다해야 하는 것처럼 기리도 갚아야 한다. 기리는 기무와 성격이 다른 의무다. 영어에는 기리에 해당하는 단어가 없다. 기리는 인류학자들이 각국의 문화에서 찾아낸 기이한 도덕적 의무의 범주 중에서도 가장 흥미로운 개념이며 일본만의 독특한 산물이다.
