Hangul is a difficult character to make fonts compared to other characters. Even if the font contains only the basic character set, 2,780 characters need to be designed, and 11,172 characters need to be designed to contain all the characters that can be expressed in modern Korean. This is why we had to rely on fonts developed by font companies, not individuals. But a lot has changed in the last decade or so. These days, new types of Hangul fonts created by independent type designers can be easily accessed around the world. There are several reasons behind this change, but the main factor among them is the development of font production technology. Glyphs, which is introduced as a key tool for font design in this book, is a prime example.

Developed by German font designer and developer Georg Seifert, Glyphs drew attention as an innovative font production method when it was announced in 2011. Functions such as smart components, multiple masters, and open type features provided by Glyphs provide an optimal environment for designing Hangul fonts. Written by authors who have been teaching typography for many years and participating in the development of a 'Hangeul Combination Group' specially created for Hangeul in collaboration with Georg Seifert, as well as translating Glyphs into Korean, this book produces the most Hangul-friendly font among existing programs. Using the program Glyphs, it realizes a task that would not have been possible in the past, called 'your own font'.
