NU 토비 굴림체

«NU Toby Gulimche» is a Hangul Day commemorative font created in collaboration with «Piece Layer», an editorial shop that introduces products infused with the spirit of Heungik Ingan—the idea of bringing joy and excitement to the wider world—and the vibrant spirit of Korea. Based on Gulimche, a typeface long used in Korea’s digital environment, «NU Toby Gulimche» reinterprets its forms by incorporating the early letterforms of Hunminjeongeum and Toby’s lively character. It retains Gulimche’s distinctive features—rounded strokes, monolinear weight, and the separation of individual jamo—and draws from the geometric structure of Hunminjeongeum, its consistent and symmetrical dots and strokes, and near-perfect circular forms. Generous spaces are maintained between consonants and vowels, brush-writing gestures are introduced into ㅋ, ㅌ, and ㅍ, and the circular forms of ㅇ and ㅎ are designed to remain intact even within limited spaces, creating a rhythmic sense of heung throughout and around the letters. «NU Toby Gulimche» seeks a form that feels smooth yet tactile, somewhere between the warmth of Gulimche and the geometric order of Hunminjeongeum. By looking again at the familiar Gulimche and exploring the diverse formal possibilities within it, «NU Toby Gulimche» proposes a new way of interpreting the rounded gothic tradition.

굴림체는 오랫동안 한국의 디지털 환경에서 사용되어 온 익숙한 글꼴입니다. 둥글고 매끈한 획과 일정한 모노라인의 두께, 자소를 분리해 조합하는 방식은 굴림체만의 인상을 만들어왔습니다. «NU 토비 굴림체»는 이러한 굴림체의 특징을 바탕으로, 익숙함 속에 숨어 있는 조형적 가능성을 다시 살펴봅니다. 획의 둥근 형태와 자소 사이의 여유로운 공간을 유지하면서 글자 하나하나가 독립적인 형태로 읽히도록 설계했습니다. 특히 ㅇ과 ㅎ은 좁은 공간에서도 원형의 인상이 유지되도록 다듬어 글줄 전체에 리듬을 더했습니다. 익숙해서 지나치기 쉬웠던 굴림체를 새로운 시선으로 바라보고, 오늘의 디지털 환경에서 다시 사용할 수 있는 굴림체를 제안합니다.

훈민정음은 소리를 기록하는 문자를 넘어, 자음과 모음의 원리를 바탕으로 만들어진 체계적인 문자입니다. «NU 토비 굴림체»는 훈민정음 초기 자형에서 발견되는 기하학적인 구조와 일정하고 대칭적인 점과 획, 정원에 가까운 원형의 형태에 주목했습니다. 이러한 요소를 굴림체의 둥근 획과 모노라인 구조 안에 담아, 익숙한 한글의 모습을 새롭게 구성했습니다. 자음과 모음 사이에는 충분한 공간을 두어 각각의 자소가 명확하게 드러나도록 했으며, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ에는 붓글씨에서 비롯된 쓰기 방식을 더해 단순한 기하학만으로는 표현하기 어려운 움직임을 만들었습니다. 전통적인 문자 구조를 그대로 재현하기보다, 훈민정음이 가진 질서와 형태의 원리를 오늘의 글꼴로 번역하는 방식으로 새로운 한글의 표정을 탐구했습니다.

‘흥’은 가볍게 들뜨는 기분만을 뜻하지 않습니다. 함께 어울리고, 움직이고, 새로운 것을 만들어내는 과정에서 자연스럽게 생겨나는 한국적인 에너지이기도 합니다. «NU 토비 굴림체»는 이러한 한국의 흥을 글자의 형태와 리듬으로 표현하고자 했습니다. 둥글게 이어지는 굴림체의 획과 자소 사이의 넉넉한 공간, 반복되는 원형과 대칭적인 구조는 글자 안팎에 리듬을 만들어냅니다. 여기에 토비의 흥나는 캐릭터성을 더해 반듯한 글자 안에서도 조금씩 움직이고 튀어나오는 듯한 표정을 담았습니다. «피스레이어»와 함께 만든 이 한글날 기념 폰트는 한국의 문자와 디지털 문화에 익숙한 굴림체를 새로운 방식으로 바라보는 시도입니다. 익숙한 형태에 낯선 움직임을 더하고, 글자를 읽는 일에서 보는 즐거움까지 이어지도록 설계했습니다.
