모노스페이스 폰트(Monospaced Font)는 타자기에서 시작되었다. 기계식 타자기는 키를 누를 때마다 활자 헤드가 일정한 거리만큼 이동하는 구조였기 때문에, 모든 문자가 동일한 너비를 차지해야 했다. 문자의 폭이 제각각이면 줄이 맞지 않았다. 이 기계적 제약이 모노스페이스라는 형식을 만들었다. 컴퓨터가 등장한 이후에도 모노스페이스 폰트는 유지되었다. 초기 컴퓨터 터미널은 화면을 고정된 격자 단위로 분할하여 문자를 출력했다. 각 셀에 하나의 문자가 들어가는 구조였기 때문에, 문자의 폭이 균일하지 않으면 화면 출력이 불안정해졌다. 이 환경에서 모노스페이스 폰트는 자연스럽게 표준이 되었다.

«NU Static» is a text font designed for use in ASCII Art. ASCII Art is a method of expressing images by arranging characters and symbols in a grid format, which requires uniform width across all characters for accurate reproduction. This structural requirement gave rise to the monospaced — or fixed-width — font, and «NU Static» was designed with this condition as its foundation. Among monospaced fonts, «NU Static» is a full monospaced font in which Hangul and Latin characters share exactly the same width. Hangul normally has a fixed-width structure, yet most Hangul fonts — even when Latin characters are designed as monospaced — do not align them to the same width as Hangul. «NU Static» unifies Hangul and Latin to an identical width without exception, ensuring that every character, regardless of script, sits on a perfectly uniform grid. The typographic density between the two writing systems has also been carefully balanced, so that any combination of characters reads at the same visual weight. Alongside the Basic font, three Frame fonts are also presented. These fonts incorporate the symbol combinations characteristic of ASCII Art as decorative elements, allowing users to complete designs featuring ASCII Art through typing alone — no plugins or additional settings required.

프로그래밍 환경에서 모노스페이스 폰트가 선호되는 데에는 실용적인 이유가 있다. 코드에서 들여쓰기는 의미를 가진다. 문자 폭이 균일해야 들여쓰기 깊이가 시각적으로 정확하게 드러난다. 괄호, 세미콜론, 연산자 등의 기호가 일정한 간격으로 배열되어야 코드의 구조를 한눈에 파악할 수 있다. 아스키 아트는 모노스페이스 폰트의 또 다른 용도다. 문자와 기호를 격자 형태로 배열하여 이미지를 표현하는 이 방식은, 모든 문자의 폭이 동일할 때만 형태가 정확하게 유지된다. 가변폭 폰트를 사용하면 문자마다 너비가 달라져 격자 구조가 무너지고 의도한 이미지가 왜곡된다. 아스키 아트가 터미널과 초기 인터넷 문화에서 발전한 것은 그 환경이 본래 모노스페이스 폰트를 사용하고 있었기 때문이다.

한글 폰트에서 모노스페이스는 조금 다른 방식으로 작동한다. 한글은 본래 모든 글자가 동일한 너비를 사용하는 고정폭 구조다. 이 때문에 한글 폰트는 기본적으로 모노스페이스에 가깝다. 그러나 라틴 알파벳이 함께 포함된 폰트에서는 한글과 라틴의 너비를 통일하는 경우가 드물다. 대부분의 한글 폰트에서 라틴 알파벳은 가변폭이거나, 고정폭이더라도 한글과 다른 너비로 설계된다. 한글과 라틴을 완전히 동일한 폭으로 맞추는 풀 모노스페이스 설계는 그래서 드물다.
모노스페이스 폰트에서 특히 설계하기 까다로운 문자는 i, l, m, w처럼 본래 폭이 극단적으로 좁거나 넓은 글자들이다. 고정폭 안에 이 문자들을 자연스럽게 넣으려면 세리프를 넓히거나 획의 간격을 조정하는 방식으로 공간을 채워야 한다. 이 때문에 모노스페이스 폰트의 설계는 가변폭 폰트와는 다른 조형적 판단을 요구한다.

The basic form of the glyph is open on the right side.
When characters are connected, the frames link together; however, in cases of spaces or the end of a sentence, the right side of the frame remains open.
In such cases, you can fill the empty frame using the Stylistic Sets feature in OpenType.

- Illustrator: Window → Type → OpenType panel → Select ss01 or Set 1 from the [Stylistic Sets] icon.
- Photoshop: Window → Properties → Character options → Select ss01 or Set 1 from the [Stylistic Sets] icon.
- InDesign: Window → Properties → Click [OpenType] at the bottom of Character → Select ss01 or Set 1 from [Stylistic Sets].
- This feature operates normally only in Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).

[Handling Proportional Spacing Issues in MS Word]
Since MS Word for Windows forcibly reduces the width of space glyphs within the program, if you want to use the font as a monospaced font according to its original settings, you can uncheck the option below before use:
- MS Word: Word Options → Advanced → Layout options for → Uncheck "Adjust character spacing for half-width and full-width characters".
